I am a mom with young boys. I am also a book addict hoping to pass on my addiction to my children. However, because I'm rather protective, I pre-read almost all books my children read to make sure they are appropriate for my kids. I could not have been more thrilled with this series! While there is violence, it is not overly gory. The author writes in a very readable style which also instructs. The first book of the series begins to actually teach the reader a new language. You feel as if you are learning and struggling along with the protagonist.In addition to the historical and cultural lessons, another aspect of the series I particularly enjoy is the emphasis on the good qualities of a warrior. The protagonist must struggle and practice to achieve the desired qualities. His experience teaches many transferable concepts for boys growing into adulthood such as dealing with prejudice, devastating loss and earning his place in the world. I can't wait for my boys to dive into these books so we can discuss them together!

Okay, so the Young Samurai is Harry Potter with an historical setting and a couple hundred fewer pages. YA readers won't care. The story is every adventure loving kid's fantasy. Set in Shogun era Japan of the late 1500's, Jack is a rigging monkey on his father's ship. When the ship is attacked by pirates, Jack ends up in the Sea of Japan, is rescued by a samurai and sent to an elite samurai training school. Of course, it turns out the pirate attack wasn't random, Jack has something the pirates are desperate to find, and the samurai training Jack has been receiving from Japan's greatest master swordsman comes in very handy. Like Harry Potter, Jack is an outsider who endures harassment and finds two friends, who help him adjust to this strange new culture, and vow to be his allies. Well, actually one friend and ally, the other can't decide if he wants to be Jack's friend or enemy. The historical details are rich, fascinating and extremely accurate. In a surprise twist - the evil antagonists are ninjas. All readers will be swept up in the adventure and history of the Young Samurai, even the most reluctant readers.

This book series is well written, thought out and even has a couple of my favorite Samurai plot lines in it. This has been one of my favorite reads on Kindle at this time. Yeah it may seem like Harry Potter with ninjas yet it is so much more than that. It has impressed in every way while the story evolves.

I may be an all-round Japanese-culture freak fan but worry not, for I never let those things bias my reaction, if not tolerance, to a novel.And I have to say this book didn't even need a bias boost. Well written with believable and lovable (not always in the cute "aww" way) characters, I quickly became an addict to this series and was a click away from greedily buying book #6 before I realized I should give the writer some kudos and fame.The writer had a mission and it was well-executed in this book.One of my favourite aspects are the challenges and fight scenes; descriptive but easy to follow and the author obviously did his history research.And even if the most base form of the plot does not sound 100% original this novel makes it its own train track. Enjoy.

Not a bad story but a little shy on what I expected

This is a funny fast pace book that will keep,you up all night and if you like fun action books this is the one for you

I got this book at the library for my oldest son to read. My husband picked it up and read it all in one night. He liked it so well that we are buying the entire series to keep at home for us all to read.

I've never really been interested in Japan or its history, or samurai for that matter, but this book seemed interesting so I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! From the very first page, this book grabbed hold of me and held on to the very end. I never knew Japan, samurai and ninja could be so interesting and exciting! Chris Bradford has a talent in writing good, nail-biting adventures that are both realistic and thrilling to read. He somehow manages to mix some history into the story without overdoing it. The characters are good and it's very easy to connect with the main person, Jack, whose life is turned upside-down. He not only sees his father being murdered - he is also thrown into a world where no one understands his language and everyone is a potential enemy. He does make a few friends, but he's got even more enemies. Many are acting hostile towards him, and not all those who seem friendly at first have good intentions. - Who can he trust and who shall he fear? Also, Jack has a secret which he swore not to tell anyone ... Given no other choice, Jack must learn the rules and taboos of a samurai in Japan during the 1600s in order to survive ... and to get back to England to his little sister.

Maister, one of the world's leading authorities on the management of professional service firms, is the author of several successful books, including Managing the Professional Service Firm, True Professionalism, and Practice What You Preach, and coauthor of The Trusted Advisor.Charles H. Green is an executive educator and business strategy consultant to the professional services industry. Charlie has taught in executive education programs for the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and for Columbia University Graduate School of Business, as well as independently through his firm, Trusted Advisor Associates. This is a very good book--thoughtful, provocative, instructive. Having said that, there is nothing new here, nothing that hasn't already been said before, in "How to Win Friends and Influence People," by Dale Carnegie. Carnegie's book is the "Bible" on how to build trust, sell the right way, manage effectively, resolve customer and employee disputes, and succeed in a highly-competitive and often hostile world. In the '80s, while working for a large mid-western company and assigned the task of changing the culture of our large retail organization, I must have read a hundred books on selling, negotiating, problem solving, how to get along with the boss, management, dispute resolution, etc., etc., and the basics were all the same, and available in Carnegie's marvelous book. Having said that, I recommend this book. It's pointed, it's filled with example after example on how to build trust--the cement of long-term client relationships--and it gets at the heart of the matter: to be successful, you must learn how to listen effectively, be transparent in your motives, be flexible and open to change, be dedicated and driven, and most of all, be humble. Humility is the key to self-control. Final note: I know people who read book after book looking for some secret message that will enable them to leap over mountains and achieve great success, career satisfaction, and personal achievement. They read books such as this one, miss the timeless lessons being illustrated, and move on to another book. Stop: what you're seeking is right here. This book has all the Dale Carnegie essentials: read it, study it, ponder it, and remember, it's not the destination that counts, it's the journey.

As previous reviewers have noted, Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is more comprehensive, more actionable, shorter, and more readable. Nonetheless “Trusted Advisor” has a few good nuggets for those working to build and strengthen professional services relationships.The core of the book is the trust equation:Trustworthiness = (credibility + reliability + intimacy) / (self-orientation)1. Credibility: Listen empathetically for rational and emotional issues to help clients frame the problem then partner with them to craft a detailed solution with carefully managed expectations.2. Reliability: Deliver consistently and excellently on projects, mindful of small touches along the way.3. Intimacy: Communicate as you would with a close family member or friend, sharing and working through professional, and where appropriate, personal issues.4. Other-orientation: Always work (transparently) in your client’s best interest

Sure, be the trusted advisor, someone who never gets anything wrong. LOL The philosophy is good, but quite hard in practice. The other key take away is that you always work for your client's best interest. That's how you build trust. I'd say more important than that is you SHOW how your actions benefit them even at your own expense.Otherwise, they won't even realize how good they have it

I was referred to this book by a colleague. As a consultant, I need to provide the best possible service to my clients. This book is really basic. I found that most of its recommendations were things I already do and have done for years. It provides reliable advice on how to establish and maintain relationships with business associates. It does not provide much advice on how to prioritize and place needed boundaries on client contacts. Good but not great starter book.

This book is right on target. Anyone who desires to develop lasting relationships with clients will want to read this book. From the outset the authors hook the reader by establishing the three basic skills that a trusted advisor must have: (1) earning trust; (2) giving advice effectively; and (3) building relationships. And it gets better as the book progresses. The concept of building trust is brought home in a succinct equation: T = (C + R + I)/S where T is trust, C is credibility, R is reliability, I is intimacy and S is self-orientation.I have found this simple equation to be most useful in gauging the strength of relationships built over the years. It also explains how frustratingly easy it is to lose the trust we've built up. Those who have difficulty maintaining long term solid relationships with friends or clients would do well to check their self-orientation. It is highly likely, if you're honest with yourself, that you are pretty much motivated by your own self-interest and that will come through to clients and friends - regardless of the words you speak or protestations to the contrary.I wish I had come across this book (and the follow-on book by Charles Green, Trust-based Selling) years ago. It would have explained much about the success I had with clients as well as the failures that I suffered. This book will move the successful mentor/coach from the level of conscious incompetent to conscious competent and on to the ultimate goal of unconscious competent.

This book lights a pathway to a service that leaders and business owners need and don't easily find, the wise, honest, and trusted inner circle advisor. We have no shortage of consultants, professional services, and various fiduciary relationships, but there are few on the level that the authors describe. The trusted advisor is grown over time on a foundation of talent experience, and education, but in the end is more than that; more than just a consultant or technician. It is someone who surpasses all of that with a special combination of care, honesty, character, and wisdom. It is something to work to become, but does not come with a framed certificate or degree.

He also teaches fencing at The Eagle Hill School, an excellent college preparatory boarding school for students with learning disabilities. With Coach Robert Ferullo (also of Pioneer Valley), he wrote "Coaching Fencers with Learning Disabilities," which was published in the Winter 2006 edition of the USFCA magazine, The Swordmaster. Paul holds Level 3 Certification in all three weapons from the USFA Coaches College, and is certified as a Level 3 Armorer by the Armorers College. From the USFCA and the International Academy of Arms, he holds the titles Prévôt d' Armes (Provost at Arms) and Maitre d' Escrime Epee (Master of Epee Fencing). He is a former Secretary of the USFCA. Sise remains active in the USFCA by attending conferences, sitting on examining boards, and teaching coaching clinics in the New England area. Paul is a graduate of Lawrence University, where he earned a B.A. in Geology and was Most Valuable Fencer his senior year. He attended UMass, Amherst, for graduate school where he helped coach the fencing club and earned a M.S. in Geology. He currently lives in Western Mass with his wife Karen and daughter Zoe.

This book is everything I had hoped and expected it would be and is an excellent addition to my library. It has filled a need for basic information and will now allow me to pursue my interests in acquiring skill with the foil at the beginner level.

I've done her reset before and the science is sound. The book has parts that are a little too 'new agey' for me, but overall I think it's a great book. So many women's hormones are out of whack and doctors are slow to understand that it's not normal to age this way. For those of you who read the book but didn't try it, I'd say maybe you should give it a try before knocking it.
