Immediately added to my favorites shelf. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The Woman Who Smashed Codes will be compared with Hidden Figures, and that's fair, to a point. Both books have at their core a story of remarkable scientific/mathematic achievement, overlooked because of gender, largely forgotten (until now) as others took credit. But it is so much more, so rich in its account of not only an extraordinary woman, but the time in which she lived, two World Wars and her central role in both, the incredible marriage that gave birth to modern American cryptanalysis, that I think it deserves to be evaluated on its own.Even in the hands of a merely serviceable writer, it would be an enjoyable read. But Fagone elevates the story, weaving it into as rich a tapestry as you could hope for. Secondary characters jump from the page just as much as Elizebeth and her husband William; little details transport you to the small, smoke-filled rooms where Elizebeth and her tiny team toiled in obscurity in defense of the country. Fagone firmly establishes Elizebeth Friedman's place in our history, and not only gives her her due, but demands that we reevaluate what we thought we knew about the wars, and the origins of America's intelligence services (nearly all of them have her fingerprints on them), and the people who are given credit for critical milestones in the country's history. This is a magnificent, memorable, important book.

Anyone interested in the History of cryptography knows William F. Friedman, known as the man who broke Purple the Japanese cipher machine and many things. But who did know that his wife, née Elizebeth Smith, was his equal in cryptographic skills? She created a Coast Guard cryptographic team, broke an Enigma without any help from Bletchley Park, helped expose many Prohibition-era gangs and Nazi spy networks in South America during WWII and worked in tandem with William during WWI. She is as much part of cryptographic history as her husband is.This is her history in that book, I highly recommended it.I knew she was very good but I didn't know she was that good. Thanks to the author for the book, loved it.

When Richard Nixon asked Chou En-Lai in 1972 about the impact of the French Revolution, the Chinese Premier famously said, "It's too early to tell." That terse response is generally understood to illustrate the Chinese ability to take the long view of history. But it might be more accurate to regard it as reflecting the constraints on those who write history. Historians can only work with available records: there is no history without documentary evidence. And sometimes decades, even centuries pass before the most crucial evidence comes to light. In fact, ironically, the exchange between Nixon and Chou reflects a misunderstanding that drives the point home even more strongly: they were both referring to the events of 1968, not 1789. Only now, much later, once a diplomat present at the scene clarified the exchange, can historians accurately interpret what the two men meant. There are few areas in which the unavailability of documentary evidence has been more telling than in the history of espionage in the 20th century. Only in recent years have the archives of the CIA, the KGB, MI6, the NSA, and other leading intelligence agencies opened widely enough for us to understand what really took place in the world of espionage in World War II and the Cold War. (Doubtless, some explosive documents are still locked away and won't surface until later in this century, if ever.) And there is no more dramatic example of how what has passed for history has misled us than what we have been taught about the FBI's role in counterespionage in the 1920s and 30s (combating rumrunners and smugglers) and in the 1940s (catching Nazi spies).Working with recently declassified files from the World War II era as well as long-ignored archival records and contemporary press reports and interviews, journalist Jason Fagone has brought to light at last the astonishing story of Elizebeth Smith Friedman and her husband, William Friedman. (Yes, her first name is spelled with three e's.) As Fagone shows in his beautifully written story of this surpassingly brilliant couple, The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies, the Friedmans may well have been the most important 20th-century American codebreakers, and quite possibly the best and most successful in the world.William Friedman is celebrated in cryptology circles as the man who broke the Japanese military code called Purple. "MAGIC became the top-secret moniker for these Japanese decryptions . . . MAGIC led directly to bombs falling on imperial ships at Midway," the turning point of the war in the Pacific.Fagone notes, "Today historians of cryptology believe that in terms of sheer, sweaty brilliance, the breaking of Purple is a feat on par with Alan Turing's epiphanies about how to organize successful attacks on German Enigma codes." However, independently, before the US and Britain's Bletchley Park were collaborating on the effort, Elizebeth Friedman broke not one but three different types of Enigma machines. Fagone makes abundantly clear that the two were at least equal in ability. In fact Elizebeth may have been just a bit smarter. (William always insisted she was.)"William Friedman is . . . widely considered to be the father of the National Security Agency," Fagone writes. But both he and Elizebeth came to loathe the practices of the agency not long after its formation in 1952. It's very likely they would be scandalized by the indiscriminate collection of information about civilians by today's NSA.As Fagone notes, "Elizebeth and William Friedman unscrambled thousands of messages spanning two world wars, prying loose secrets about smuggling networks, gangsters, organized crime, foreign armies, and fascism. They also invented new techniques that transformed the science of secret writing, known as cryptology." Although today Elizebeth isn't nearly as famous as her husband, that was by no means always the case. During the 1930s, she become a celebrity for her work against rumrunners and other smugglers and gangsters during the Depression. The public attention halted when she was enlisted by the Coast Guard for a top-secret effort to identify the extensive Nazi spy network in South America—work at which she and her team were extraordinarily successful. Their efforts led to the dismantling of the Nazi network well before the end of the war. However, J. Edgar Hoover claimed the success for the FBI, ignoring their efforts, and he was able to get away with it because he had become so powerful. "It's not quite true that history is written by the winners," Fagone writes. "It's written by the best publicists on the winning team."The Woman Who Smashed Codes is an astonishing story that simply has to be read to be believed. His principal subject, Elizebeth Friedman, was an extraordinary woman he refers to more than once as a genius. (The evidence is there.) And Fagone writes the tale with often-elegant, metaphorical prose. He calls the book a love story, but it is of course far more than thatThe same declassification of secret files that allowed Jason Fagone to write The Woman Who Smashed Codes has led to the publication of several other recent books about women in espionage. The most prominent of these was Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II by Liza Mundy.

Move over Mata Hari! Elizebeth Smith Friedman extracted secrets from enemies not by her feminine wiles, but by her intelligence and innate ability to solve codes. She became fascinated with codes while working at Riverbank Laboratories to reveal what were believed to be codes in the works of Shakespeare. She met William Friedman there and, as a married couple they were recruited by the army to decipher codes during WWI. Using pencil and graph paper, the Friedmans were instrumental in the defeat of Germany. From 1920-1930, Elizebeth worked for the Coast Guard in deciphering codes sent by bootleggers and drug smugglers. Many were arrested and convicted based on both her evidence and testimony. During WWII, she deciphered radio codes, especially from Nazi agents working in South America. Her husband worked for the OSS and developed both cypher machines and code manuals. He was the breaker of the Japanese Red Code while she broke the Nazi Enigma Code. Mrs. Friedman swore an oath never to reveal what she had done during the wars. Thanks to the diligence of Jason Fagone, archives in the Marshall Library bring to light the work of this American heroine. Though the title is too long and the portion on George Fabyan and his Riverbank Laboratories a bit tedious, the rest of the book reads like a fascinating spy novel. Yet, this is a work of history which finally gives credit to a woman who lived in the shadow of her brilliant husband, but through her own superior capabilities, served her nation tirelessly on the cryptic battle front.

The 10,000 Year Explosion: How Civilization Accelerated Human Evolution, by Gregory Cochran Henry Harpending

Review

John Derbyshire, author of Prime Obsession"Did human evolution come to a screeching halt fifty thousand years ago when Homo sapiens emerged from Africa, thus ensuring the psychic unity of mankind? Don't be silly, say the authors of this latest addition to the fast-emerging discipline of Biohistory. In clear prose backed by a wealth of hard data, Cochran and Harpending add a biological dimension to the history of our species, and hammer another nail into the coffin lid of 'nothing but culture' anthropology."Bruce G. Charlton, MD; Professor of Theoretical Medicine, University of Buckingham, Editor in Chief of Medical Hypotheses“The 10,000 Year Explosion offers scientists and historians a new and fertile direction for future research, and provides the general public with a better explanation of the past, present, and future of human beings.... I was motivated to read the entire book in a single marathon session.”John Hawks, author of Human Evolution“For years, human geneticists have been uncovering a picture of human evolution. But now, Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending are encouraging us to 'fast forward' the discussion."Booklist“A most intriguing deposition, without a trace of ethnic or racial advocacy, though directed against the proposition that ‘we're all the same.'"Publishers Weekly“There is much here to recommend…and their arguments are intriguing throughout…it's clear that this lively, informative text is not meant to deceive (abundant references and a glossary also help) but to provoke thought, debate and possibly wonder.”Wall Street Journal“Important and fascinating…the provocative ideas in The 10,000 Year Explosion must be taken seriously by anyone who wants to understand human origins and humanity's future.”Seed“The 10,000 Year Explosion would be important even if it were only about population genetics and evolutionary biology, but Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending…have written something more. This book is a manifesto for and an example of a new kind of history, a biological history, and not just of the prehistoric era.”New Scientist“The evidence the authors present builds an overwhelming case that natural selection has recently acted strongly on us and may be continuing unabated.”

#101,659 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This review is on the book, "The 10,000 Year Explosion" and the authors are Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending. Their book presents an important and revolutionary idea about humanity, namely that we are currently evolving at a pace faster than we can imagine. This idea is in sharp contrast to the conventional wisdom that human evolution has ground to a halt. For example, evolutionary biologist, Stephan Jay Gould, wrote that there has been no change in humans in the last 40,000 or 50,000 years. The book's title suggests that the book focuses on the period of time about 10,000 years ago and that is correct. However before going there, the authors address an earlier period and present their startling take on why it happened. The period is around 30-40,000 years ago and is often referred to as the Great Leap Forward. There was an extraordinary change in human behavior during this period. Innovation for the first time had suddenly become part of very human activity. One example is a proliferation of polychromatic cave art depicting animals, which to us are now long extinct. Other examples are: sculptures (fertility goddesses), music instruments ( bone flutes), jewelry, and improved tools and weapons. The authors believe that the spark for this creative surge may have been the secondary result of an injection of new and different genes into our genome. Those new genes came from interbreeding with Neanderthals. The fact that interbreeding occurred is argued for by the authors, but it is not clear to me that they were aware that Paabo Svante had concurrent to their book, developed procedures for restoring ancient DNA and had decoded nuclear Neanderthal DNA. He proved interbreeding to be true. The authors then turn their attention to the period 10,000 years ago when humans invented agriculture, which gradually displaced the hunter-gatherer way of life throughout much of the world. Agriculture was a mixed blessing for these early farmers. It made a huge difference in the availability of food, but that benefit came at a heavy price. Unlike the healthy diet of the hunter-gatherer, early farm crops were inadequate in nourishment. Stated more precisely, human bodies had not yet adapted to these new foods. Moreover, disease became a stressor for the farming communities. Human and animal waste made its way into drinking water and living in close proximity to domesticated animals allowed animal diseases to crossover to humans. As agriculture allowed for larger populations and the idea spread throughout the world, it left fossil evidence that humans had become far less healthy compared to hunter-gatherer cultures. When a species is confronted by life-or-death stressors, superior genes are passed forward into future generations whereas inferior genes are eliminated. In other words, the strong live and have offspring whereas the weak die and do not. Favorable mutations allow for genetic adaptations to be made. Just consider how superior our immune systems are compared to the Indians of both North and South America to Europeans diseases like measles, whooping cough, mumps, etc. They are non-fatal childhood diseases to us, whereas they were exterminating diseases to the Amerindians. Perhaps ninety percent of the Amerindians were killed by such diseases. The earliest farmers in the Fertile Crescent were in the vulnerable condition as the Amerindians until generations of evolutionary adaptation produced protection. The authors made an argument that I found to be breathtaking; namely that evolutionary change is accelerated by a larger population size. Mutations are the change agents in evolution, but mutations are extremely rare. Either a mistake is made in the sexual reproduction process or cosmic rays change the code of a nucleotide. However as population size increases, the occurrence of mutations increases too. The agricultural revolution increased food production and allowed the population to rapidly expand. Since then, innovation after innovation has accelerated the control humans have over their lives. Today the world population is at 7.4 billion people. The number of favorable mutations occurring worldwide must be mind-boggling. Many of these genetic changes affect mental capability. The more useful the genetic change is, the faster it will spread through the population. It appears that we have not stopped evolving, we are evolving faster and faster.Ralph D. Hermansen, March 27, 2016

As the authors note in the opening chapter, the common dogma passed down by many prominent popularizers of evolutionary biology is that with the origin of anatomically modern humans, cultural evolution has completely supplanted biological evolution in our species. A corollary of the central dogma that all post-paleolithic human adaptation has been cultural rather than biological is that there are no significant biological differences between groups of people.Cochran and Harpending provide a much-needed antidote to this completely inaccurate view of human biology and history. They make a strong case that far from cultural evolution circumventing the forces of natural selection and biological evolution, cultural changes serve as a powerful impetus for genetic changes in human populations. Obvious examples include the independent origins of adult lactose tolerance among cattle herding peoples in both Africa and the Middle East. Less obvious but nonetheless compelling examples include potentially strong selective pressures leading to changes in cognitive and personality traits as a result of sociocultural circumstances. In a sense, none of these findings should come as a great surprise, since human society and culture obviously creates the environment in which people differentially survive and reproduce, implying that the forces of natural selection have been and remain as active as ever.I hope that Cochran and Harpending's book is widely read (particularly by social scientists and the general public) and helps to refute the stubbornly held view that only culture and environment matter as the driving forces of modern human history..

A fascinating read. Much of what the authors write is speculative, for example, the nature of the traits that civilization would select. But their speculations are also very plausible. The chapter on Ashkenazi Jews was particularly interesting. They propose a very plausible, and testable, model for how the Ashkenazi Jews developed their high intelligence over the span of only ~1000 years. I suppose the only reason there has not been more research on the subject is due to the taboo surrounding race differences in intelligence. One thing that is certain is that evolution never ceases and can occur quite rapidly. Clearly people evolving within the context of civilization are going to be exposed to different selective pressures than those who do not. People whose ancestors evolved within advanced civilizations are, in essence, selected to be civilized, whereas those whose ancestors did not, are not. This simple concept goes a long way towards explaining the state of the world as it is today.

I have now read this book twice on Kindle and then ordered the hardcover version, which is easier to leaf back and forth and make notes in. It is incredibly dense and detailed with information that has been compressed and given almost in outline form. I plan to work my way through the references and do more reading. I have been struggling to read Lewin's Gene XI and will spend renewed effort with this book as inspiration. I was also pleased to see that it agrees pretty much with the first chapter of my own medical history book, in which I tried to summarize human evolution in brief form. My own book is called "A Brief History of Disease, Science and Medicine," http://www.amazon.com/Brief-History-Disease-Science-Medicine/dp/0974946656.

I always enjoy this series. I've read it before and have seen the anime. Buying the books on Kindle now that they are being legally published is only fitting. I own the hardbound copies in Japanese, so having them in English makes it nice, especially since a Kindle is easier to cart than a book. Didn't have any digital problems, so all is right with the world regarding this volume.

At the end of the previous novel, Lady Julia and Brisbane, after an amazing sequence of "yes/no" reversals, had finally recognized their love for each other and gotten married. That, for me, created a hope that in the next novel, they would mature in their interactions, but--unfortunately--that was not the case, and we are left with another situation where they hide secrets and work as much against each other as with each other. And that is why I'm not likely to read any more books in this series. That said, the setting of this novel (India) is portrayed richly, and some of the secondary characters do develop and change (Portia and Plum, for instance). I may, I suppose, come back at some point, but for now I am jumping ship and looking for some new series to pursue.

I enjoy the clever banter and familial nature of these stories. Glimpses of Victorian England and the changing lives of that era, with the advent of trains, the telephone and women's lives. Also enjoy the relationship between Julia and Brisbane very much. How can you go wrong with half Scot and half gypsy?

Great books to read at night before bed. Interesting and engaging but not so compelling that I can't fall asleep. Strange praise, I know, but I need books like that in my life! They hit the spot!

I loved the writing, the characters, and the situations these ladies continually get into. It is a fun series, and I would love to purchase more of her books!

Lady Julia Grey remains as amazing as ever!

Love these books!

Awesome storyline and characters...can't put them down!!!!!

great reading!

Let's be clear - my definition of broke ass is vastly different than the author's, by like 13,000 dollars or so, second it's stuff I already know thanks to the phenomenal ability to Google "cheap weddings" or whatever I googled - I actually found Google to be more useful (somewhere out there is a list on how to have a wedding for under $1000) . It's funny in the way an intro paragraph to a paper saying "buckle up bitchs I'm about to teach you a thing I learned at four am" is funny - and about as insightful as in would expect from such a paper. Look if you're overwhelmed it (like any other wedding planning book/app/guide) will give you a starting place

I'm not a traditional bride and this did have some good ideas on how to save money but it seemed to be more focused on a white wedding than something outside the box. The budgets start at 10k (lowest in that category was 7k) and that is not a broke ass bride. That's a bride who has some money to spend. My entire wedding is budgeted to be about 5k and its formal, that is a broke ass bride.

I'm still using this book right now, planning my wedding in September 2016 on a budget and I can't believe how many amazing ideas I have already used. The previous rave reviews that I read were absolutely correct. One example of a great idea that I never even heard of but is gaining popularity is forgoing the expensive photo booth and setting up a selfie station! Have already made my own backdrop and used this past Halloween to buy props on clearance. Love this book!

Nice book for those who aren't broke, but are looking to save a few bucks on Marriage. When I think broke, I'm trying to get under $10k.

Funny, witty, sharp and helpful! No silly rules, just excellent suggestions and resources, designed to get you the wedding of YOUR dreams. Sort of like having a fashion stylist curate your wardrobe for you, Dana LaRue provides creative solutions that do not all include "fewer guests" and "DIY" (like none of us ever thought of that!).I highly recommend it.

Purchased for my Daughter who is planning her Wedding. She has gotten alot of good tips from this book.I personally think every bride to be who wants or has to be on a strick budget should check this book out.

Great book. Tons of ideas for a thrifty wedding that doesn't look cheap. I bought a lot of wedding planning books and this is the one that I actually use.

This has helped my sister a lot when it comes to planning her wedding. She really has a tight budget. reading this book put lot of things in perspective for her. Already she had dropped her potential spending down below her budget!

Lying Up a Storm

Review

What a powerful story! Julia has captured the essence of what every child experiences when lying becomes a choice. From the internal conflict to the "out of control" nature of one little fib leading to another, children experience the full circle of a lie. Every child will identify with Levi as he struggles to control what begins as an ittybitty fib but grows into a whopper lie. Julia has once again created a child friendly text that teaches an incredibly important life lesson. --Mary Jo Melvin, Ph.D. Professor of Early Childhood Education and Department Chair, Edinboro UniversityLying produces both internal and external consequences. Julia Cook uniquely teaches children the internal repercussions of their fibs in "Lying Up A Storm." As in all of Julia's books, her characters are easily relatable for children. The lessons she teaches build character and encourage prosocial skills that will enable children to live happier and healthier lives. --Katherine Robbins-Hunt, Ph.D. Professor of Special Education and Assistant Chair of the Department of Counseling, Edinboro University

I purchased several social skills books to help my newly diagnosed ADHD/Aspergers 9 yo son. He likes this one pretty well! The only thing is, I am not sure whether or not I realized that the character's name was "Levi", which is the name of my son...but one thing I did not know....and did not like, necessarily....is that the kids started to nickname the boy "Le-LIE" instead of "Levi". Now, that is probably really cute to help kids remember not to lie. But if your kid's name is "Levi" already, it might not go over so well! My son doesn't seem too offended by it, but he does ask why they are calling him "Le-LIE". I just kind of say "Because he lies" and I sort of brush it off. But maybe I should just stop reading the "Le-LIE" part and just use the name correctly when I'm reading it. He doesn't choose this book to read very often, and maybe that's why.On the other hand, I love how they show how the lying causes a "cloud" and that it makes you feel bad, and that telling the truth makes you feel better. My son readily told me that when he lies, it makes his stomach feel yucky. So that made for a good conversation about how we feel when we lie. I also like that the mother in the story admitted that she told a small lie, too, and then made it right later on. That way kids know they aren't alone in the problem.I like this book a lot, but if I could change anything, I would rather they not mock the child's name by changing the name into ending with "Lie". It's a little harsh, I think...and I wish I had not read the story to my son "as written".

I am a school social worker and I purchased this book for a classroom lesson on the consequences of our choices. I think it will work well for this lesson, however, after reading this story I would probably recommend this book for 2nd graders and up. The language and story is a bit advanced to capture the attention younger students. I like the lesson that this story teachers, however, I feel like the story isn't very well written. One page (or paragraph) will be written in a rhyming style, and the next won't. The story is also somewhat unrealistic with the boy going from lying about everything to not lying at all overnight.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher National Center for Youth Issues in exchange for an honest review on Amazon. I am a parent of three kids, ages six, five, and three. I also teach third grade at a high poverty school in Indiana. I have found several of Julia Cook’s books useful to teach with to both my class and my kids.Lying is a topic at some point, every educator and parent has to deal with. It may be my three year old telling me he didn’t do something (when he did), or he could be a group of children in class lying about an action they did or didn’t do. Small or big, one thing is for certain, every child will lie at some point. This book is for children that you may find him or her lying a lot of little lies.Lying up a Storm introduces the reader to Levi. Levi has a problem. You might have already guessed it…lying. Levi lies A LOT. He lies about washing his hands, cleaning his room, letting the dog out, etc...And the worst part he, at the start, he doesn’t believe it is wrong. After all, they are just tiny lies, what harm can they do….right? As you read through the story, you see exactly how lying effects Levi…and he doesn’t feel very great about it.Levi asks his mom if she ever lies. She shares an honest story about a recent time she lied…and how it made her feel. This is a great added element to the story because it makes it so much more relatable. Children can see that everyone could have struggles with lying, even adults BUT the feeling you get from lying is not ever worth anything you may get or avoid from the lie.The last section of the book Levi has to go and correct all the lies he told the previous day. I like this resolution because it holds Levi accountable to his actions. Even though it is hard to do, Levi feels much better telling the truth. This is the main point. If we lie we will experience guilt and sadness. Even though telling the truth may require more work, or have a consequence, it is always better than the alternative. As usual in Julia Cook’s books there is a section in the back expanding on further tips for parents and educators. I found this section in this book very insightful with easy, practical suggestions. This book would be appropriate for a wide variety of ages, probably a mature toddler age all the way up to upper elementary. It is a read book to read aloud and facilitate discussion with.I would highly recommend this book to parents and educators that feel they need help with teaching the topic of lying. It is an easily understood book that will keep a child’s attention.

I was impressed that this book kept the interest of my 7 year old grandson and the images and theme of the book are ones that he has remembered and applied. We use the phrase "don't create a storm" and he will stop his tale and identify truth vs. fiction. Good job

My son really enjoys reading this book. He is 7 years old and we have the occasional problem with little lies and making up stories. This book is very helpful and a nice way of making kids understand that lying causes problems

I absolutely LOVE this book! I bought it for my then 6 yr old. Typical kid stuff, but I think this book puts it into perspective very well for kids. I would gift this to family (or close friend). I've even recommended it to our counselor. So she could add it to her list of recommendations. This is my own opinion. It probably reads a little too good, but it's just how well this book is written.

We bought this as a gift and had it sent directly to them. I assume that it was well received. We did not read it so cannot give a review.

This book is great for my elementary aged clients. My clients who have a problem with lying have really enjoyed it and been able to relate to it.

This did not hold my 5 years old’s interest, nor mine. It’s too long and frankly boring, which deafeats the purpose of using the book to teach a lesson. The page set up is odd with words everywhere. Generally underwhelmed.
