Let me start with a disclaimer. I am the writer's current PhD student. However, this has not affected my review.For the longest time, I was looking for a book that would explain the dissertation process in simple terms, and with examples. I wasn't looking for a children's book (!), but I was tired of lectures and writings by Yoda-like professors who vaguely described the process. In school, I heard, "This topic is too broad." or "This is too narrow.", etc. I was very confused.This book starts with the first chapter explaining exactly what makes a good research idea. The rest of the book explains how to structure the proposal. All of this is done in a down-to-earth, incredibly coherent and lucid writing. I actually enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoyed reading my favorite genre fiction books. I love the writer's style.I highly recommend this book to any graduate student.

Excellent guide to writing a dissertation proposal. The author writes in a very engaging style and clearly and succinctly covers all the bases. There may be some review if you've already taken some research methodology course work but Dr. Terrell puts all of your course work into the context of proposal writing. It all comes together in these pages.

Of all the books, textbooks and other resources I have in my library, I always end up referring to Steve Terrell's book for concrete examples of how to think about the problem I want to solve, and how to articulate it. Another reviewer mentioned it picks up where Creswell stops, and I think that is an excellent way to put it - It is an easy to use guide for thinking about the major parts of a dissertation, and the examples and guidelines are very helpful.

Thanks Dr. Terrell! This was the source of reference I needed to understand how to write and organize my dissertation proposal. This book picks up where Creswell leaves off, explaining the "who, where, when, & how" of the qualitative research method. I especially liked Dr. Terrell's explanation of interview protocols (p. 80) and the three approaches interviewers should use and consider. Thanks again Dr. Terrell.

This is book you can read in one sitting and it would give you the basics on your dissertation's organization. As you are reading it, jot down your ideas and you are going to end up with a first rough draft

Full disclosure: Dr. Terrell was my best professor at Nova Southeastern where I earned my Ed.S. He is not only amazing at explaining the use of statistics (his other book), he is the only professor that ever explained the dissertation process to me in a way that made sense. If you are writing a dissertation, this is the book you need.

This book met more than my expectations! Dr. Terrell is great at breaking things into a simplified method. I knew this book would be great because his book "Statistics Translated" is in my collection of doctoral resources. All doctoral students need to purchase this book!

This is super helpful. It outlines the requirements of dissertation proposals in a clear, easy to read manner.

Reviewing Leadership “is particularly concerned with whether Christians’ core convictions shape their views and practices of leadership or whether these are more affected by wider cultural assumptions.” In the opening chapter of the book, the authors seek to answer the question of why leadership is such an important topic in today’s world. Before answering this question, they define leadership, saying, “leadership involves a person, group, or organization who shows the way in an area of life— whether in the short or the long-term— and in doing so both influences and empowers enough people to bring about change in that area.” Leadership is different from management; management seeks to bring stability and organization, while leadership is about bringing positive change. It is important to understand the differences between leadership and management, because they often get confused in today’s culture. After defining leadership and explaining the differences between leadership and management, the authors go on to give biblical, historical and contemporary perspectives on leadership. Most of the scripture that is explored comes from the writings and life of Paul; however, there is an explanation of how leadership has been modeled in different faith traditions. In looking at the writings of Paul and the different faith traditions, the authors point out that all spiritual leadership have the following characteristics: intentionality, reflection, self-evaluation, covenant building, intellectual integrity, ethical integrity, followership, and perpetual learning and development. These characteristics lay the foundation for spiritual leadership. As the book comes to a close, the authors take the foundation that has been laid out in the previous chapters and begins to show how leadership practices can be lived out. These practices are lived out through faithfulness, integrity and service. The authors note that these three attributes are best exhibited in the life of Jesus, who was the perfect model of leadership. Therefore, it is important to note that leadership is less about what a person does and more about who they are as a person. If true biblical leadership is going to exist, then it first must be about following Jesus: “it is only through the gift on the cross of Jesus’ life and the gift of the Spirit that people have any chance of developing into the kinds of people who have the capacity to serve and therefore lead others well.”Concrete Response I have always been a student of leadership. I have read a number of books on the subject, and until recently, I have always viewed a leader as someone who is out in front of the people, inviting them to follow. However, over the past year, through a ministry called 3DM and classes that I have taken at Liberty University, God is starting to reveal to me the flaws in the idea that the leader is always the one out in front and ahead of the people. While the concept of an out-front leader might have some purpose and value, it limits new leaders from being formed in the life of the organization. I believe that many modern day churches are struggling with developing new leaders that can extend the kingdom of God in this world. While they might be growing numerically in attendance, they are struggling to make disciples who can make disciples, because the primary leadership in the church comes from the person speaking from the stage. Banks and Ledbetter give another concept when it comes to leadership; they suggest that leaders who can “place themselves behind others do not just give others room to take the lead but also personally back them as they do so and provide whatever resources— material, financial, and institutional— they need to succeed.” The idea of leading from behind is a new concept for me that is shifting me from always being in the spotlight to developing people behind the scenes. While not intentionally, I have limited other people in our church from leading because I am always the one up front for everyone to see. I believe this leadership style has limited our church from growing the way God has intended and has not allowed us to reproduce new leaders.Reflection I felt that Reviewing Leadership provided good insight into Christian leadership and brought to light many concepts that have made me reconsider how I am leading in my present context. However, I feel like the book, especially in the first few chapters, had a difficult time holding my attention. In exploring the historical, cultural, and religious thoughts on leadership, it lacked personal application. While the end of the book did provide some application and case studies to learn from, the book would have been better organized if personal applications were mixed in throughout all the chapters. In addition to lacking personal application, I felt the first few chapters were disorganized and jumped from one random topic to another random topic with no sense of order. The book could have been simplified and shorter shortened to present the information in a more organized and concise manner. In addition to the organization of the book, I felt as if the book never answered the question, “why is leadership important?” An entire book was filled with words describing what leadership is and how it has been used in history, but there was never an explanation about why all of this information is important for the reader to know. I think this book could have benefitted from a strong introduction that described why leadership is necessary and important in the world in which we find ourselves today. This introduction would have provided some much needed tension and a framework for the rest of the book. My leadership context is in the church world, as I am a pastor of a church. In reading through this book, I would have liked to see more examples and illustrations used that related to pastoral leadership in the church. While the authors did share a great story about Gordon Cosby, they failed to provide specifics on how Gordon decentralized power in his ministry. I would like to have read more specifics instead of vague ideas and concepts; this would have allowed me to not only have an idea about how a ministry can operate, but about how I could move my church toward a similar model.Action Earlier in this paper, I stated that I have always been a student of leadership. I have read a number of different books, attended a multitude of conferences and listened to an abundance of podcasts, all on the subject of leadership. While some of these training tools have been developed for the Christian leader, a good number of these resources have been dedicated to the secular business world. While I do believe that all truth ultimately comes from God, in reading this book, I was convicted that I do not do an adequate job making sure that these resources line up with the biblical leadership principles that are discussed in scripture. Banks and Ledbetter stated, “From a Christian point of view, it is only when the direction and the method are in line with God’s purposes, character, and ways of operating that godly leadership takes place.” I want to be considered as a strong and influential leader, but more than that, I want to be seen as a godly leader. I want people to look at my life and see me as a man full of character, integrity, humility, faith and love. This book has prompted me to put less of a focus on the cultural ideas of leadership and make biblical concepts and ideas the priority in my leadership. If I am living a godly life and leading people in a godly way, I believe that I will naturally become a strong, competent, influential leader. The second action step that I need to take in my life after reading this book, is being intentional about leading from behind the scenes. I have already been able to implement this into my ministry this past Sunday by asking one of the men in our church to fill in and preach the Sunday morning sermon. Although he had no real experience with preaching, he was willing and did a great job. I was able to coach him before and after the service on how he could improve in preaching, and it let other people in our church see that ministry and leadership does not revolve around one person. In the future, I need to start delegating more tasks to empower others to do the works of ministry while I disciple them from the behind the scenes. On Sunday mornings, I would like for another lay individual to be doing the welcome, announcements, and at times, the sermon. Having people other than myself on the platform would inspire people to step up and lead in new and different ways. I want my leadership ability to be less about fulfilling my personal potential and instead about relinquishing it to fulfill others’.

I've read a lot of bad books for college classes and this probably makes my Top Ten Worst Books list. The first 4 chapters are a collection of seemingly unrelated ideas with zero practical value. If this information were presented to me in a conversation, I would stop the person and ask why they were telling me all of this. It all seemed useless. The author never answered the "who cares" question in the book. In the last two chapters, the book got slightly more interesting, but it was still only a slight improvement over the rest of the book. I'm sure there are many great books on leadership out there that would be much more interesting and helpful than this one. As for this book, my copy will probably be making its way into a campfire in the near future.

This book refined and challenged much of what I had been taught and come to believe about leadership. It is my belief that this book has value for anyone in a position of leadership even if it does nothing more than to cause deeper thought about one's siesta listed beliefs and practices.If you are called or appointed to lead, or if you have forged your own way to a leadership position, this book can help further your journey and refine who you are.

This is perhaps the most painful book on leadership that I have ever read. It also seems to try to stand on the name "Max De Pree", the former CEO of Herman Miller, for attention and support; however, a two-page forward and a page and a half of conclusion do not make up for the 120 pages in between. While it is apparent that the authors know their material, what matters to the reader is application. The wording, structure, and presentation take what could be an exciting topic and dulls it down to an academic drag. In some areas the text headings are incompatible with the text presented, such as "biblical leadership" in the second chapter, which only gives a summary review of Paul instead of a review of biblical leadership as it would lead the reader to believe. Finally, the text could have benefited from additional editing and structuring.

It's an encyclopedia of leadership, basically. Not well-written. Confusing and full of just stuff

I recently received the book above as a free book to review. The Book of No Worries was written by Lizzie Cox who was the former editor of popular teen brand Sugarscape.com.I saw that this book was designed for kids ten and up. I therefore thought I'd be the perfect mom to review it as I have a nine and ten-year-old boy in my house. (I also have younger girls but they are five and seven so I knew this wouldn't be for them.)Folks, I have never been so appalled by a book in my life. I understand that we need to talk to our kids about tough things.Listen, I don't want to start a raging war here, but this is simply NOT okay, and if you are a parent of a young child, you need be aware that literature like this exists. If this book was targeted toward fifteen and sixteen years old, I would actually not have nearly the issues with it. They have been exposed to things and are creating their own thoughts.But to throw things like this at a ten-year-old? it's not only inappropriate but it is wrong to step in right in front of a parent and tell their child things that some people in society preach but MANY families do not believe in.For example:I teach my children that abortion is WRONG. You may not agree with that, but we believe it is wrong. But this books says "hey if you had sex, quickly go to another adult -- not your parent --and they can get you help in making sure that baby doesn't stick around."While I understand that transgender is a fact of our society, I do not believe that confusing a child who has expressed NO issues with their sex with the fact that maybe they do have an issue is simply so overboard. Why can't a kid be a kid? Are we seriously needing to tell them about this at TEN?!Honestly, I could go on and on, but I will just let the pictures above speak for themselves. Please understand me, I get that there are things going on in society. I get that we need to be there for our kids and they might end up growing up differently than we did. But that doesn't mean that parents want their young children doused in this from such a young age.The woman who wrote this is not a doctor. She is a journalist. She is sharing things that are absolutely her opinion and are clearly meant to brainwash children into thinking like she does.My kids are farm kids. They probably understand sex better than most kids their age simply because they watch it on the farm all the time. My nine-year-old asks more questions than you can believe. But these are things that are NOT on their mind yet.And this is NOT because I homeschool. I have plenty of friends with kids in public and private schools that concur with this sentiment. We are dousing our kids in sexuality way too early.LET THEM BE LITTLE!!!!!

This book is an excellent resource for tweens who are experiencing the normal roller coaster of growing up. With chapter headings including School, Mental Health, Friends, Appearance, Emotional Well-being and more, tweens will be easily able to focus on an area of concern. Especially helpful are the q and a sections and those in which a young person directly speaks to the reader about an issue that was faced.The author conveys that all worries can and should be talked about, not held inside. She normalizes many concerns and offers ways to cope. Most importantly, she offers hope that things can get better.Give this book to a young person that you care about. Encourage your school or community library to add this volume to the shelves.
