Overall it's a very good, comprehensive guide full of useful information. Many plates have exaggerated coloration which makes IDing from photos difficult, especially with highly variable species or drab individuals. Few diagnostic hints are given next to the plates which can be frustrating. Some species have male and female and dorsal and ventral plates while others may only have a male ventral plate. Variability is not made apparent on the plates which can lead you to rule out the correct species at times. This guide includes some outdated taxonomy (i.e. White Checkered-Skipper is still listed as a subspecies. Viola's Wood Satyr is a separate species. No Intricate or South Texas Satyrs.) and many ranges maps do not reflect recent changes in distribution (i.e. the Checkered-Skippers) but this because of the date of publication and not misinformation. I would recommend purchasing a newer edition if/when it is available.

I am using the Field Guide almost every day to figure out who is visiting the milkweed that has taken over my brick terrace. I did not use cement to seal the joints and they love to poke up between the bricks. I love butterflies and there are so few Monarchs now. So the milkweed stays and the butterflies rule. I can find another spot to rest my butt! The Field Guide is well done. Lovely colored plates that show the various markings for each butterfly. I just wish the butterflies would hold still a little longer so I can figure out if it is a Canadian Swallowtail or an Easter Tiger or? And the Fritillary's? An Aphrodite or an Atlantis? It is a wonderful book and is already getting a steady use. I think I will use it for the rest of my life. Well done.

This book is acceptable. It provides helpful clues about each species as well as a measurement that can be useful. However, I have found that an entire species is missing from this book! After only a few weeks of use this tells me that there might be much missing!!! As well they sometimes only provide the upper wing pattern which is not going to help identify some skippers, blues, etc. The Kauffman guide is exponentially better when it comes to depictions, however this provides better descriptions of species like skippers that don't photograph well. The species missing is the Common Checkered Skipper.

This is the second time I've bought this book. I left the first one out in the rain and replaced it with a different book that listed butterfly and plant species in Latin. I MUCH preferred this book so finally rebought it. Separate plates are provided for the various butterflies in each family but further information, photos, range maps, food and habitat are then given on another page. This page number is referenced on the plates facing page. The back of the book contains a glossary, index to host and nectar plants as well as a butterfly index.

I love Peterson field guides. They are the best.

This was a gift and the person I gave it to LOVES it! They rave about the pictures and descriptions of each butterfly and tell me it is the best reference they have on Eastern butterflies. Often taking pictures of butterflies and referring back to this field guid for identification. So far they have been able to identify every butterfly they have wanted to. Highly recommend.

The Peterson's guides are a must have for anyone to spends time outdoors and want to be aware of the flora and fauna around. We own a large collections and bought this to supplement the old copy we had. Comprehensive and in depth.

I'm a retired botanist who decided to learn something about Lepidopterans as a new pursuit. After purchasing a couple of other guides which I wasn't completely satisfied, I turned to the old, reliable Peterson series. I wish I had done so first. It has some good explanations on the biology and ecology of these species, excellent pictures and graphics, and a clear method for helping with species ID. As always for books in this series, this is a good place for the beginner (and experienced) naturalists to turn for information.
