Sherlock Holmes finds himself in a very tony mental institution with no memories except his name. The first half of the book consists of Holmes working through clues to himself. It also sets up an adventure in the form of a fellow patient who is a man Holmes put away for murder. A very promising set up.Then the patient and a very special nurse disappears and the institution's head asks Holmes to help out. What a great story that would have been to have Holmes work through the clues both to the disappearance while uncovering more about himself. Instead the author has Holmes instantly remember everything about himself and his adversary and knows exactly what the patient is going to do thus removing any sense of suspense. The book just continues down hill with a reveal that practically destroys Canon and Holmes himself and puts Watson in a position he would never be able to sustain.
Although not a Sherlock Holmes reader, I found this story interesting and insightful. I was able to get a real sense of Sherlock and Watson through Mr. Henwood's prose. His attempt to capture the flavor of a traditional Holmes' novel is successful and the pace keeps the reader engaged to the very end. This is a well done first novel for this writier.
The proofreading for this was awful. The mistakes and grammar were off-putting. The story, as others have said, showed promise but wasn't properly utilised. However, if you're a Sherlock fan, almost anything is worth reading just for the brief connection to the amazing detective.
This alternative solution to the disappearance of Sherlock Holmes was an engaging return to my love of the great detective. It presents a satisfying and creative story about what came to pass during the time he was supposedly gone forever, lost to his dear friend Dr. Watson. Don Henwood does a good job of keeping true to the times of the story action, creating new characters and settings for the reader to enjoy, and adds his own plot twists , including a possible romantic interest for our beloved and brilliant sleuth. I especially recommend it to other devotees of Conan Doyle's quirky and legendary hero.
The author creates an intriguing struggle while faced with a vengeful killer who attempts to extract his pound of flesh from Sherlock Holmes.
