As a background: I was a graduate economics student of Kenneth Boulding in 1985. He and his wife Elise were among the most prominent Quakers in the U.S. during the latter half of the 20th century. I learned much from Kenneth, and had the opportunity to ask him questions about Quakerism in his office. It resonates with some of my views on religion and personal responsibility.When I came across Smith's A Quaker Book of Wisdom recently on Amazon, I ordered it with great anticipation. Having read it cover to cover when it arrived yesterday, I can say it is an enjoyable book for an onlooker like me, but I was expecting (or maybe "hoping" is a better word) that it would provide a deeper exploration of the Quaker vision than it actually did. It kept my interest, but I wanted more. I was going to share it with my son, who is interested in comparative religion, but there's just not that much here to make it worthwhile. 3.8 stars rounds to 4.

As a new Quaker, I found this book to be a wonderfully helpful introduction to the Religious Society Friends by broadening my understanding of Quakerism and its rich history. While my Meeting and personal beliefs are Liberal Quaker, this book is an excellent resource for any and all Quakers or for those who simply want to learn more about Quakers. The author does an excellent of summarizing Quaker history and wisdom into a compact, compelling, and readable format. Well Done!

I would not have read this book, except that it was loaned to me by a member of our book club with her enthusiastic endorsement. Neither of us is a Quaker, but the "life lessons" presented by Robert Lawrence Smith, if followed by all of us, would make the world a more peaceful, happier place to live.Some examples (all direct quotations):One of the fruits of aging is the realization that our greatest possession is what we know about life.The truth will make us free--free from meaninglessness, free from lovelessness, free from the emptiness and frustrations of egocentricity.We cannot withdraw from the process of living while we make up our minds how to live.The most precious gift life offers us is choice.There are dozens of other "nuggets," but it is the overall sense that the author lives his beliefs that makes this such a valuable read. His search for truth and meaning has lasted his whole life. From his unusual (for a Quaker) decision to enlist in the army during World War II to his years as headmaster of a Friends school, he has followed his conscience, always looking for the light and "that of God" in each person. Inspiring.

As a person who was raised in a fundamentalist Christian background in the Bible Belt until his teenage years but who has received a terrific education and who has been exposed to many influences outside of both this area and outside of Christianity, I have spent many years trying to reconcile my Christian faith to the beliefs that I truly hold dear in my heart. I believe in a loving God who does accept all of his children now and will someday accept all of them into heaven. This is what my heart tells me; in other words, the "inner light" that both George Fox and the author of this book speak of is what is telling me this. The author said that Quakers think that the "inner light" comes before everything else, and considering the fact that the Bible (while important!) is filed with contradictions, this makes perfect sense to me. I believe that this book has helped me to finally reach a peace that I had been unable to attain. God is love, and the author promotes this view through the ideas that he presents and explains. For me, this book has been a blessing. I think that the Quakers have the right ideas.

I read a biography of Benjamin Franklin and the `Friends` were mentioned a few times. I was curious about Quakers as a religion and as my own family heritage. Robert provides an excellent and well written answer to my curiosity while also helping be to understand one Quakers way. Thank you for the write up.

It has been several years since I've taken trigonometry, so I purchased this book as a way to practice my skills before resuming classes that may need those skills. The book has fully solved problems, so it is easy to work through a problem on your own and check the answer at the end, or follow along with the problem in the book if you get stuck on a step. This would be a good practice book for a student who wants more practice in addition to the problems that are in their normal textbook, or for someone who is not enrolled in a trig class and wants to review some problem solving skills.This book should not be intended to replace a trigonometry textbook or course, but is a good supplement to those.

Outline is the operative word in the title. This is not a text book that painstakingly teaches Trigonometry. It best used as a supplement to a trig text book or course in trigonometry. The book does provide important definitions and some descriptions of terms and formula, and this is very helpful. However, the strength of the book is the problems. That is what this Outline is all about. Once you have a basic understanding of trig principle, the examples and problems build your confidence in finding solutions and recognizing when a specific concept should be used. Good book, but not by itself unless you are reviewing trig from a previous experience. It had been 40 years since I took a course in trig, so the book was a bit concise.

Very helpful book for those of you that have bad teachers and you need to teach yourself Trig to get through class. Because of this book I turned a 1.7 gpa to a 3.8!!

I took Trig many, many years ago so I was looking for a book to review the information before I take PreCalculus. This book is definitely an outline with very minimal instruction. It looks to be a good book to practice problems since it has a lot of solved problems but for someone who needs thorough instructions on how to work the problems, this isn't it. That is the case with me. I will have to order another book in addition to this one.

The drawing is cartoony but lively, the characters are naively sensuous and easy to like, and the plot is cobweb-thin. (C'mon, "erotica" at least makes the effort.)I can certainly imagine lots of high-sounding critique about lack of male figures, but whatever. It's by girls ('Women', whatever, 'girl' is their word), about girls, and for girls. But I think it welcomes male people like me. I don't see this as 'lez' stories. I see sexy and opportunistic, making the best of whatever cheerful partner avails, especially when Prig and Prig, Inc., so desperately need comeuppance.-- wiredweird

Fun, sometimes hard to follow

Gosh, I haven't had occasion to use the phrase "polymorphous perverse" since my 70's sociology days, and here it is in all of its splendor. The "perverse" part isn't judgmental; it just means beyond the usual social norms. To quote a Wiki summary, "Freud theorized that some are born with unfocused sexual libidinal drives, deriving sexual pleasure from any part of the body. The objects and modes of sexual satisfaction are multifarious, directed at every object that might provide pleasure...Lacking knowledge that certain modes of gratification are forbidden, the polymorphously perverse child seeks sexual gratification wherever it occurs."Well, that's a little heavy, (actually way, way too heavy, but I really wanted to use "polymorphous perverse" in a sentence), but it gets across the idea. These stories simply celebrate the unbridled pleasures of sex, and are presented with joy, good humor, and cheerful abandon. Every article or blurb about Coover starts with a phrase along the lines of "lesbian-themed". Well, I guess so, but that's way too limiting. Our heroine is free, open and polymorphous, and since she's a woman and the characters in the stories are all women, I guess this is "lesbian-themed".But the basic message and point here is joy, honesty and pleasure. Annie has been saddled with a miniature "guardian" because of her uninhibited ways. Fortunately for both of them, it turns out that Annie's guardian, Nibbil, is as sexually adventuresome and enthusiastic as is Annie. The two of them have ariotously good time exploring each other's capacity for pleasure and satisfaction. This is an excellent intermediate German workbook. It covers all the necessary aspects of the grammar, and it provides clear explanations. It should be used in combination with the answer key. Some might consider its approach to be old fashioned; however, I consider it essential. It is impossible for the adult learner to intuit the grammar of German as a child does -- a practice so often adopted in proficiency textbooks. Learning the grammar, in reality, provides the student with a shortcut. And this book does an excellent job of that!

They said "comprehensive" in the ad, several times. It does not have the answer key. But you can get it on line for "free" if you give them your credit card number. Do Not Buy!!Also, there are questions to things they haven't taught and unusual exceptions to various rules. You need a teacher familiar with this book to use it.

Arrived quickly but it is a workbook that has so much inside writing that it won't be usable for my son's class. I don't think this book should have been resold. Cost almost as much to ship back as I paid for it, so I will keep it as a backup copy.
