This book follows a grain-, legume-, dairy-free approach to paleo without going to some of the early extremes of the movement (anyone remember the days when paleo meant no salt and no vinegar? yikes!). Though they've become acceptable in paleo circles in recent years (they're even included on the Whole30 "yes" list!), potatoes are absent. They do use sweeteners (honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar) here and there, but use of sugar is limited overall as there are no desserts in the book - it's a cooking book, not a baking book.I'd say the selection of recipes is fairly well-balanced for an 80/20 paleo lifestyle - 80% being meat-and-veggie dishes, while 20% is paleo treats such as crackers, and pancakes. Oddly enough (or maybe not so much), most of the treats can be found in the breakfast section. For people new to paleo who are used to eating muffins and cereal for breakfast, the recipes for paleo muffins and granola will probably become gateway staples to help them transition to paleo. The book focuses on main dishes, though a decent selection of sides and appetizers has also been included. I appreciated the section of vegetarian mains very much as I've been meaning to have a few meatless meals in the week. There's also a subsection of staples, such as condiments and even paleo bread. As it says on the cover, the book includes 150 recipes in total. Though it feels poor compared to other ATK books (their Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook, for instance, contains a whopping 650 recipes!) , I feel it's a solid collection of practical recipes - mostly sautéed dishes, stir-fries and slow-cooker meals. I think that by keeping things simple and easy, they save the reader from inaction due to information overload. The fact of the matter is that a lot (and I do mean a LOT) of the recipes in other ATK books are already primal-, if not paleo-, friendly. So why buy this book? Well, I feel it helps teach the reader/cook how paleo substitutions work best as well as how to cook recipes that have become paleo staples, but cannot be found in conventional cookbooks. If you're new to paleo, it's invaluable. If you're a paleo veteran, go on and admit it: you've been hankering for this book to come from the burners of ATK. And if that doesn't cut it for you, then all I can say is that you'll be missing out on the best nut-crusted chicken breasts ever.

I’m a huge fan of all things Chris Kimball, American’s Test Kitchen and Cook’s Illustrated. Many of their recipes have become family favorites and ones that I can depend on. When I saw this book, I had to get it.The book starts off as an introduction to Paleo and why they decided to do this book. It also provides a nice chapter on the Paleo pantry and common Paleo ingredients. When it comes to the recipes, this book follows the same formula as others, ATK and CI books. They first provide a detailed description of why the recipe works that includes information on what methods they tried and how they arrived at this recipe. This is one of my favorite aspects of ATK and CI books, it helps guide me when I’m thinking of making a substitution. Additionally, sometimes the recipes have alternate endings (for lack of a better term) where they provide different spices/sauces to make the dish completely different. Finally, this book has nutritional information which is always helpful. From a Paleo aspect, I like that the book doesn’t get too creative with the ingredients and I like that it really captures the spirit of the diet. Sometimes you have Paleo books/blogs that have recipes that are full of “natural” sugars (honey, maple, pureed dates…) and other ingredients that are too hard to find or are super expensive. Yes, you have to purchase different flours, but you don’t have to buy pounds of dates to make “brownies.” I enjoy that there is not even a dessert chapter included!I’ve had the book for a week and so far I’ve made the following (my comments are included next to the item):Blueberry Muffins – best textures Paleo muffin/bread I’ve ever had, not a ton of coconut sugarSlow Cooker Caribbean Chicken – the recipe called for legs, but I used wingsCreamy Cauliflower soup – so far my favorite – managed to be very flavorful, creamy and filling with just butter, cauliflower, water, onion and leeksSo far all of these have been very good and I plan on making them again soon. I have several other recipes that I’m going to try over the next few weeks and will update my review. The only word of caution I will give (and why I’m not giving this five stars) is that ATK and CI have decided to not include the prep time and cook time at the beginning of the recipe in any of their books. Because a lot of the recipes include different appliances (mixer, food processors) and delayed cooking times (IE – when making the muffins, I had to have the arrowroot flour, water and coconut oil sit for 30 minutes before mixing everything and baking it) it’s important to read the directions ahead. I recommend reading them twice! I know that is cooking 101, but having the prep times at the beginning of a recipe always helps.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom is by far my favorite book in the world. I'm an avid reader, but this was the most significant book at a point in my life (high school) where I was lost, confused, searching for my place in the world, and reeling for the loss of my grandmother, who was one of the most important people in my life. I was searching for a faith in something, and I picked up this book. It changed everything. The premise of the book is that when you die, you meet five people. They are not always the five most important people in your life (parents, grandparents, spouses, children, etc), but sometimes people who you met in passing or who you'd rather forget. Sometimes it's someone you don't really even know. But they're always someone who has had an important impact on your life.In The Five People You Meet in Heave, the story follows Eddie as he meets his five people and his life's meaning is revealed to him. He meets five people, only one of who he really would have thought would be on his 'five people' list. The story is heartbreaking and moving and life affirming. I am still a sobbing mess every time I re-read it. I can't tell you how many highlights and pencil marks my hard copy of this has, and probably just as many for my kindle version. Yes, I have both a hard copy and a kindle version. I treasure my original copy, but love having the digital version at my fingertips everywhere I go. This book is THAT good. It's the kind of book you pass along to a friend who is struggling or a teenager in need of guidance and searching for the meaning of life. If you only read one book, make it this one!

I read this book, because it was assigned to my children for the summer. I expected a good story, but I didn't expect such real characters or the beautiful imagery that makes you feel like you're there. There are words of wisdom throughout the book, but the main message is absolutely beautiful. I would like to be more specific. However, I feel like that would spoil the book for future readers. I gave this book five stars, because I feel like I received a hug from heaven. It really blew me away. Read it and listen to it on Audible.

Oh my gosh! I loved reading this book! It makes you think about so many things in your life. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly religious in any sense, just a very interested way to think of heaven and why things happened to you while you were alive. I will recommend this book for the reat of my life and I can’t wait to read it again. It is a very quick read. I couldn’t put it down!! You will love it!

This book was recommended to me and it took me 3 years to buy it, always in the back of my mind of something to do but never done. Then when I finally got it, I consumed it in one morning. I’m not usually a big reader honestly this is the 3rd or so book I’ve read cover to cover since I was in school but I simply could not put this book down! It is such a powerful book it moved me to tears many times reading it. I can’t recomend it enough!

This book is not new and has been reviewed hundreds of times so I'll keep my thoughts short and sweet on it.When Eddie died in a tragic accident he met five different people that intersected his life in one way or another. They were meant to give him clarity and answer the question "Why was I here?" Some of the people were expected but others were not.The Five People You Meet in Heaven was a short and easy book to read. I flew through the pages and was anxious to know who Eddie would meet and what they would bring to the table. Many things about his life were explained and he was given clarity on a number of things as well.I enjoyed every minute of this book. It doesn't get preachy or speak of religion but tells one story of what could possibly happen after the end. I appreciate that about it and therefore think that it would appeal to a large number of people.

Just coming off a recent read of "A Forgotten Man" by J. Pepper Bryars - which touched me deeply - and left me grieving for the 'middle class' in America - at the hands of an out-of-control Government Leviathan - in a very sad sort of way.I found this wonderful story, this simple, touching and inventive view by Mitch Albom - an author - with a vivid imagination - of a fictional heaven - where ones life, their purpose and their interconnection with the world and their fellow human beings is explained to them - through a series of story telling by those (selected by someone else - unexplained - God Maybe) who (known or unknown) were affected by one's life or that affected the main character's life throughout his or her life experiences quite refreshing. Where decisions, actions and/or inaction in various ways along their path made a big difference in that persons adventure, successes and failures. It was like medication for the previous books negative implications. In fact it was restorative, invigorating and solemnly calming for my inner soul.FIVE People You Meet in Heaven touches you at a level that causes one to think "Hmm, so that could have been me on this or that day." Or "wow who would the 5 individuals be in my life?".And about Mid Book you begin pondering, contemplating, questioning yourself and remembering people, events, dates, important occasions, career choices/changes, survival situations and narrow escapes and the like - wondering - whom your list would include. Was it this guy or that guy or this family member or that - or was it that coworker and on and on to infinity about the countless people you have brushed up against in your life.It is delightfully fun to try to go back and come up with a worthy list of names that would make you the person you are today, or find that special event which put you in the situations you were in or are in now, or the position or career you are holding now and on and on. And as this only happens when you die - you being wondering also "How That Might Now Happen To You! And for what reason or purpose?". As I said it is delightfully fun to ponder all these and just 'go with it'. And the negateers and naysayers or those condemning souls who simply trashed this and every book like it have to be those anti-religious bigots or upset by 'everything morally based' or the 'hate the concept of heaven' list or the 'only government is my God' list or some other such nonsense. They have a sort of ingrained Neanderthal-like anti-intellectual problem of negtiavism in the wrong enviornment syndrome sort of thing. This is not a political book or a social engeneering book, it is fiction, fun and challenging your imagination stuff. It is sad that they simply cannot enjoy a fun thought provoking book when they see one. Sad, just sad. This book is pure and simply fun, thought provoking and challenging throughout - I was halfway through the book when asked - what it was about. In attempting to explain it up to that point and only having read about the first three entities and encounters - I found it was easier thought about - than explained and trying to tie it all together without reading it all - made it difficult. I explained my deductions one way. But by the time I finished reading this exceptional book/story and read the last page.I realized I had been snookered by the brilliance of the authors tapestry weaving. And I was caught completely off guard and found the truth at the end was something completely different than what I imagined at the middle of my reading. Which caused me to instantly review mentally the entire story over again - to find where my error was made - at guessing the outcome incorrectly. I found it - and I wonder if others will as well. I loved it.I applaud the author for giving me a great read, an easy read and a spellbinding read and a mental puzzle to ponder that made me keep the book close by - to pick it up whenever I could. Surprisingly I began on a Saturday about noon on a road trip and finished it at my Granddaughters Birthday Party the very next day - so I could pass it on to a friend of the family - who had expressed an interest in it when he saw it on the table next to me.If you look to condemn - I am sure someone can - but I found it intriguing, fascinating and meaningful at a number of levels. Of course the most significant contemplation I had while enjoying this literary ride - was in real life if this were true - there could actually be a dozen or two dozen or scores of people or even more - in every person's life - who significantly affected in some way each of our lives similarly to the characters in this meaningful work.Something think about - no doubt. My congrats to Mr. Albom.JPL

If you are into speed bagging and think you know all the moves, give yourself a challenge and get this book. I could always do a fast paced boxing triplet style punching, but this book makes you go from the sides, back and throw in elbows. These workouts are killer on the arms and shoulders. After buying it I realized that I don't know 95% of what techniques there are on the speed bag. There are photos for every exercise along with detailed explanations. The different punches and strikes are named in unique ways and when put in sequence in this book are listed like sheet music! Alan Kahn is truly the master of the speed bag and a master at teaching it!

If you want instruction on speed bag, this is the book for you. The guys at the gym all know one punch, maybe two at most, and for them it's all about how hard they can hit the bag, it's pretty funny to watch, actually. There's no one there who can instruct me, and in fact, after only a couple of weeks with the book I'm starting to look way better than any of the guys...at least, I have variety now with 5 punches and strikes I'm working on. Next step: my MP3 player is on its way from Amazon and I can't wait to start putting it all to music. I'm seeing how much music would help in keeping the rhythm even and the workout longer...kinda like marching cadence in the Army...those interesting chants keep the guys going further without noticing. My next purchase will be a speed bag of my own to take to the gym so I'll have a tool that's reliable and maintained by ME. Buy the book, it's worth every cent. And "used" is fine, it's gonna get bumped around anyway if you actually USE it. Oh, and did I say I'm a nearly 70 year old female?

I bought the book and the DVD and I am thoroughly impressed with the level of detail Alan goes to in both. Anyone who has seen a demo of Alan hitting the speed bag knows he is exceptional at this skill, but what became clear to me after reading the book and watching the DVD is that he is equally skilled at teaching novices how to master the techniques and nuances of the speed bag.I would recommend that you buy both book and DVD, as they support one another quite effectively. Watching the DVD took the mystery out of several techniques that I had been struggling with for a long time. I can honestly say that after watching the DVD once, my skill level at a couple of the more difficult techniques improved greatly. One of the best benefits of buying this training course is that you can ask Alan questions on a forum he set up specifically for speed bag enthusiasts;speedbagforum.comAlan and others will answer all of your questions and I learned a lot simply by reading the older threads that contained many of the same questions or discussed some of the same problems I was having.I think the combination of the book, DVD and the coaching you can get on the forum is superb and I commend all three to anyone who desires to become a highly skilled user of the speed bag.Semper Fi,Mike

This book goes above and beyond. I came into this book already having pretty decent skills and learned a ton. Great explanation even if you are a beginner as well. The pictures also help out a lot.I also appreciated the extra sections like tips on teaching others. Highly recommended to any speed bag enthusiast.

Alan Kahn was a drummer, as in musician, and he has figured out a way to write speed-bag-hitting techniques in something akin to musical notation -- but infinitely simpler! For example, FCP means "front circle punch." And he lays out the combinations with easy to follow notations like FCP, FSP....and takes the speed bag out of boxing-only applications and puts it into the realm of rhythm eye-hand coordination mastery. And by implication makes it relevant to everything from swinging a golf club to hitting a tennis ball. No, he does not mention these things per se, but the implication is that master the mind and the rhythm and relax and you'll learn the secret of excelling at sports because all sports are played in the head. And working out with the bag is simply great fun. One of the best how-to books I've ever used.

If you are trying to learn the speed bag this is the book to get. Alan has notated every punch combination in the book and provided many helpful hints for learning. If you are serious about learning the speed bag you need to get this book.

quite helpfull explained buying equipment nessary to begin the learning process and teaches more and more complex patterns . even has stuff for martial arts strikes

Everyone gives the book 5 stars and it's easy to see why. Khan is a terrific instructor and this book along with the DVD will give the buyer far more satisfaction than its price. I'm so happy with my experience learning the speed bag - I'd recommend it to anyone at any age. It is easy to suit the workout to your own abilities and intensity level. With this instruction it's a can't miss. This book and it's DVD is a little dated but there is not a need for much change. It covers so many techniques and exercises it will confidently start any beginner or satisfy most any advanced master. When first learning I did use youtube for some of the very basics (circle punching and wrapping the hands correctly most importantly) but to open your eyes to how much variety there is this book can't be beat. The instruction and exercises will get you to achieve your goals.
