Ladies, if you really pay attention and follow the rules in this book conservatively and you have very consistent cycles, then this will work for you. I've been using this method for over a year with no scares. But I use the method very conservatively.Pros:No more messing with your hormones or devices or irritants. You know exactly what's going on with your fertility. You can see if you have a thyroid problem (temps in the 96's or lower range). You will be able to time things for a girl or boy with a good degree of accuracy. You can tell if you in fact did get pregnant.Cons:You'll have less opportunities for intimacy, especially if you follow the rules very conservatively.Intimacy during the safest times will be the times you are least interested (interest is highest during peak fertility). It will take some getting used to.
All I can say is, I wish I had known about this book before I went on pills and the mirena (seriously, f— the mirena IUD; it makes women feel crazy, google it). I love that I can practice natural, SCIENTIFIC, completely non-invasive birth control. I love that it's free and I'm not paying any huge drug companies, with their total lack of ethics. I've been sending every woman I know with birth control issues in the direction of this book.I think the best part about it is honestly just understanding my body and feeling totally in control of the pregnancy risk. Cannot recommend this book enough for any person with ovaries who is or may be in a relationship with a person with testes.
When I got married in my mid 30's, one of my co-workers recommended this book in case we decided to have kids. She told me, "I hope this isn't TMI, but this book helped me get pregnant on the first try when I was your age."So, a year later, when we were planning to try, I bought this book and read it like it was biology homework. I found it really interesting and started charting my cycles. I was surprised to discover that I had normal symptoms of ovulation, despite my cycles being extra-long since I was a teenager. That alone was encouraging.Well, we tried, and I was pregnant on the first cycle of trying. I realize that this is not the case for everyone, but I really feel that the information in this book helped me. I'm also glad to know more about my personal reproductive cycle beyond just knowing when my last period was. There is so much good information for women to know about their bodies, whether we're trying to get pregnant or not. For example, the information about traditional due date tables vs. calculating due date by last ovulation was empowering. My ultrasounds have confirmed the date I conceived, which was 20 days into my cycle (this matched my chart), not the traditional 14 they normally go by.Due to this edition having come out in 2006, some of the information is outdated. There was a recent study that the methods described for determining the sex of your baby (which the author points out herself only improve your chances for conceiving a child of the sex you want by a very small percentage) don't bear out statistically at all. Also, the charting software (disc) included with the book is outdated and likely won't run on your computer. I also think the author could have gone farther in emphasizing the importance of starting pre-natal vitamins before trying to to conceive. She does mention it, but this is a pretty important step to take and it's mentioned on only briefly in passing.Anyway, this book is well worth a read, and overall I found it very encouraging. I plan on recommending it to any of my friends who are thinking of having babies.
So much wonderful information! I've been off my birth control for almost a year and have felt incredible. My senses are more vivid, I have more interest in my partner and I no longer have anxiety over a late period. I've learned so much about MY body and its habits. I encourage every woman to read up and learn YOUR body not the one the doctors tell you your should be like. I paired this information with an app called Kindara and track my cycles every month. I'm usually pretty good about taking my temperature but after a couple months, I can note my other body signals and determine ovulation on my own.
I am SO happy I took the time to read this book and to truly understand its concepts. Yes, it was very time consuming for me because I read certain chapters at least a dozen times, but that's because I was absolutely clueless about my menstrual cycle, anatomy, etc. You don't have to read every single chapter, just read what applies to you. For example, if you want to use it for birth control, just go to that section. If you want to know how to get pregnant, just go to that chapter.Yes, at first it can be overwhelming, but once you understand it and you chart for a month or two, you realize, the author is right, there are so many shortcuts...and it all becomes so easy! It's all a matter of: taking your morning temperature several days a month and also analyzing your vaginal discharge. You can also check your cervix but I don't bother with that. Analyzing your discharge has never been so interesting and fun! It never occured me to me that there are different types of discharge, I didn't realize that it actually had a meaning! I just went to the bathroom and had all this slippery, stretchy discharge coming out. It was so much that even the toilet paper was soaked. From analyzing my discharge the past few days, I KNOW that today I am ovulating and that tomorrow my temperature will go up. It's really great to KNOW YOUR BODY, what it's doing and WHY.I feel a new sense of confidence because I finally understand my body! I am so thrilled that I no longer have to take cancer causing birth control just to prevent pregnancy. Also, I'm so glad I can enjoy sex again!! Birth control completely killed my libido. My only criticism of the book is--it suggests you do Kegel exercises AS you urinate. But stopping the flow of urine can cause urinary tract infections.I SO look forward to passing this onto my daughter.
