This book is an excellent resource for any teenager whose parents are splitting or split. It gives them practical advice on how to handle it. The book starts with a section on negotiation which is crucial for kids in this situation. I'm a middle school guidance counselor and I bought a dozen to give to kids when they need it. I'm also going to give one to my stepdaughter when she gets a little older and has more control over her own schedule. I highly recommend this.

This is an excellent easy and quick book for kids to read. It helps them navigate the divorce world and even tells them to let their parents know they do not want to be in the middle of their fight. It tells them how to stay organized. How to negotiate things. And how to tell their parents to cut it out when it comes to badmouthing the other parent, or using them as the messenger.

She found a book she can relate to, I can understand a little more now also. Kids have it rough sometimes and adults forget that.

Very helpful & practical for children of divorce & a quick read!

Divorce is a difficult thing for everyone in a family to go through, not just the parents. It is especially difficult on the children in the family because they never know if they are coming or going, sometimes literally. The author herself had to figure out "how to make [her] life work while living n two homes" and often "felt disoriented and unsettled." There are two of everything when finding oneself in such a situation from something as simple as two beds to the more complicated "two sets of rules." There are pros and cons of living in two homes and the arrangements can be somewhat complicated. A young person and his or her parents need to be "partners, not opponents." Something easier said than done!One striking thing, that only cropped up at the end of the book were three facts primarily aimed at the parents: "Say only nice things about each other." "Don't use you as their messenger." "Leave the interrogation to the cop shows." Great food for thought. In this book the young person will learn about how to deal with new living arrangements, negotiating needs, making your rooms feel homey, dealing with a "crazy schedule," learning how to pack, gaining a bit of financial independence (jobs, allowances), dealing with your parents, adjusting and moving on with your life. "Two sets of rules, two sets of responsibilities: one case of confusion." Get the picture?I was quite impressed with this comprehensive and easy to read book. I learned a lot about the difficulties young people go through when they are trying to cope with parents who have split. Because the author is a "been there, done that person" in this situation she speaks very wisely from experience. As a parent, but not one in a split home, I was stunned by the number of things young people have to cope with. After I read this book, I was in two minds about it. I could recommend that parents read it to gain an understanding of what their children have to go through, but on the other hand there are books for them. My recommendation would be to purchase this book and give it to your child . . . unopened. It is a personal book, one that only someone who is going through can understand and work through.

Even though my parents aren't divorced, I was interested in the contents and decided to give it a read. I found it to be so much different than anything I've ever read before. The book is really frank in tone and was really relatable, and I keep thinking to myself, "what would I do?" if I were in the particular scenarios the book talks about. It's basically all about how to communicate with people, letting them know your needs, and how to find workable situations for yourself. I thought this advice was pretty universal, and think it's worth reading whether your parents are divorced or still together or some other arrangement.

Reading the other reviews, it seems the old adage you can't please everone holds true. Too much detail, not enough detail, too many characters, not enough character revealment - development, were it a novel.I came looking for a book about the Rabaul when held by the Japanese and found "Fortress Rabaul". I also found this. Downloading and finishing the chapter sample, I bought it immediately along with "Fortress Rabaul".For me, Bruce Gamble gets it just right. I like his flowing prosaic style, the way he interweaves the well researched historical truth together in event relevance and timelines. Sufficent detail to comprehend the personalities, units, scale, situations, maps and topographical description to make sense of it all tactically and strategically, whilst still personalising events sufficiently to maintain a personal connection on a level balancing its humanity. Importantly, he grants the gravity the historical record deserves without turning the tale into a turgid academic tome.Moral judgement of actions, personalities and political decisions of so long ago unable to be changed now which altered the course of so many lives are left to the reader to pronounce.Bought yesterday, I'm halfway through "Invasion Rabaul" already. I'd call it "a can't put down read", but I'm reading from my sickbed recovering from surgery and find fatigue prevails, otherwise its definitely in that category.If you're at all interested in the campaigns in the Solomons and PNG, the significance of the Battles of the Coral Sea and Savo Island, you'll A. understand the importance of Rabaul, and wanting to know as much about it as possible, B. want this book. Just buy it. Thanks Bruce. Job very well done.

In the early hours of January 23, 1942, a large Japanese force sat poised to attack Rabaul. Standing in their way were the 1,500 Australian soldiers of Lark Force. In what was soon to become known as Australia's darkest hour in World War II, the Japanese swarmed ashore and overran the small garrison. Many were captured, but others managed to flee into the jungle. Over the next several months, these survivors tried in vain to stay one step ahead of the Japanese. Some managed to evade capture, others were rescued, but most were eventually rounded up by the Japanese.Seen as sacrificial by the Australian government, the men of Lark Force were basically on their own from the time they reached Rabaul. The Australian government refused to reinforce the garrison, and when the Japanese landed, they refused to pull them out. These men were on their own, with no hope of assistance. The contemptible acts of the garrison commander only made things worse. Ultimately, many of the Lark Force POWs perished when a Japanese freighter they were on was torpedoed by an American submarine.Author Bruce Gamble has written a magnificent history about one of World War II's longest battles. The battle for Rabaul raged from early 1942 up until the Japanese surrender in August, 1945. Gamble's trilogy covers each aspect of this historical campaign, from the Japanese invasion to the numerous bombings by the Allies, until the Japanese were left to "whither on the vine". Lark Force's story is inspiring, and the acts of heroism against nearly impossible odds shows the character of these fighting men.I highly recommend "Invasion Rabaul" along with Gamble's other books "Fortress Rabaul" and "Target Rabaul". This trilogy does a fine job of describing one of World War II's most pivotal battles.

Great story of an intrepid group of Aussies who were abandoned by their government on Rabaul. Anyone interested in the South Pacific theater of World War 2 should read this book as it vividly illustrates the hardships endured, the atrocities committed, and the heroic spirit of those men of Lark Force.

Gamble writes extremely well of an unknown portion of the war in the Pacific. Individual heroism, lack of leadership and incredible government callousness. Throw in documentation of Japanese behavior, you won't be thinking Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a bad idea. If it weren't for them there would have been no POW Lark Force survivors. A great read. What those men went through after being deserted by the Australian government will make a reader wonder what the government was thinking. The stamina of the survivors to keep trying to save themselves without the help of the leaders, wow. The cruelty and inhuman treatment for the life of a fellow human being by the Japanese is unbelievable. I do realize this was war, however the Japanese went beyond the pale. I have the next book, Attack on Rabaul, by Bruce Gamble and am anxious the get started reading it.

Neal Wyatt is a contributing editor and the readers' advisory columnist for Library Journal. She has served as President of The American Library Association's Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), chair of the Collection Development and Evaluation Section, and as chair of the Readers' Advisory Research and Trends Committee, The Notable Books Council, The Reading List Council, and The Listen List Committee, the last two of which she founded.
