I am a Catholic psychologist/psychoanalyst. Both personally and for my clients I know that there is no peace and joy for a person without somehow finding and coming to terms with the ontological, foundational metaphysics of human life. This graceful, joyous book brings this all to the reader in a most supple, elegant, and casual way. Please do yourself a great favor and read this book! It is not a flawless book - there were a few times when her universalizing glossed over other problems. But it is an effective book. I had always known that meditation helps separate us from attachments, but in the course of this book, although she doesn't directly say this, I could see for the first time how singularly elegant and effective it is at parsing out our worldly attachments from our deepest consciousness and sense of self.I marvel at how well Ms Salzberg has passed through life's difficult times, letting them propel her directly to the core of aliveness. No self pity here. I marvel at how well she has conceptualized it. I marvel at her meditation practice. I marvel at her deep grasp of Buddhist teachings. But mostly I marvel at her writing. It is so clear, so alive, so gentle - she has predigested your problems for you and is humbly giving you the answers. She hits the mark over and over again throughout the book. Blessings and thanks to her!

Faith by renowned meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg is one of those books that can change your entire perspective of the world. There are few books that can do that, that can challenge the foundation of your reality. For me, such books were On the Genealogy of Morals by Friedrich Nietzsche and Walden by Henry David Thoreau. As a heavy reader of religion and spirituality, I thought I'd never read a book on faith apart from God, or a deity we know as God. I didn't think the word could exist without God.But Salzberg challenges all of this. She speaks of her version of faith, one that doesn't revolve around God at all. Salzberg lost her mother at nine when she witnessed her hemorrhage right before her eyes. Her father left the family when she was a young child and ended up institutionalized. To experience such devastation in childhood, it is no wonder that she could dismiss God entirely, or any higher being. But miraculously, Salzberg doesn't reject God, or she doesn't say so. She just has a different view of faith.She begins by explaining that the word faith in Pali, the language of the original Buddhist texts, means "to place the heart upon." In Faith, part memoir, part essay, Salzberg shares many beliefs and tents of Buddhism that have shaped her spirituality and concept of faith. To her faith is to keep walking forward, even in the dark. It's the strength to take that magnitude of risk, though you know not what lies ahead.I found this concept of faith wholly original, a Godless faith. What kind of faith can you really have without the power of God?Deeper into her book, Salzberg speaks of an immense interconnectedness among us, and a truth like protective hands that holds her. It sounds like God, but she doesn't elaborate as to what this is. Her concept sounds oddly familiar, like the invisible hand that Newton referred to in his writings, or that unexplainable uplifting force that Tolstoy explains at the end of his memoir. Both are referring to God, and it sounds like Salzberg is too, but she isn't.Suffering, such as when we experience trauma or loss, she says, comes from feeling alone, separate from everyone and everything around us. The core aspect of despair is this sense of utter isolation and disconnection. She explains that Buddhist teachings reveal that it is in deep suffering that faith can be uncovered and renewed. It is at this low point, the abyss, that we begin to sense this interconnectedness, that we are intimately connected to a bigger reality.But what is that thread that connects us? What is it that makes us so united and so whole? What is the source of this unity? To me, that source of unity is God, and I wonder, what is this source to Salzberg? How does she refer to this interconnectedness that is just there?Though Salzberg's book doesn't answer all of my questions, Faith is still a beautifully written, poignant, pivotal book that can stretch all notions of spirituality.

I'm still reading this book. Having read other books by Sharon Salzburg this one which is autobiographical is particularly fascinating to me, and very moving. I'm reading it with a group, and savoring it.

A revealing, thought-provoking memoir of her journey to faith. While very personal in nature, it leaves you with much to ponder for your own practice, whatever it might be. Well-written, you'll keep it as a book to read again. Her generosity is amazing, her honesty equally so. She earns your trust and fully deserves it.

This reads like a memoir. It was an engaging and informing story as the author shared her life in ways that resonated with me. An American girl looking for peace from the deep hurts of a difficult childhood. She did a wonderful job of unveiling the tenets of Buddhism and her growing faith. I found truths that were helpful whether you live this "faith" or another as I followed her story to peace. . Well done,

Sharon Salzberg is a very good writer. With such a difficult upbringing, it is very impressive that she found a real trust and faith in her spiritual journey.

This is an incredible book that I feel everyone should read. I read it in a matter of a day or two because I couldn't put it down. A must for anyone searching for how in the heck to trust ourselves and this crazy world we live in.

FODOR'S OREGON is a great travel guide to the entire state of Oregon. It features the urban centers of Portland, Eugene, Medford, Corvallis, Bend, and Salem, as well as the fruit- and vegetable-growing areas of the Willamette Valley, the seafood-producing areas on the coast, and the mountainous areas in the Cascades, as well as the warm, dry, "beef belt" regions of Eastern Oregon. There are accurate descriptions of recreation, dining, sightseeing, shopping, nature, and nightlife for each of these areas. Whether you're traveling to Oregon, or just admire the state's tendency to root for good against evil, DO NOT PASS THIS BOOK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found this guy to be extremely helpful. It helped me decide which route would be more interesting. It was not so deep into the details of every little town. But it was very useful to pick out some highlights as I drove through. There are good maps. They weren't that detailed but very helpful. Also there are good suggestions for places to eat and places to sleep. By dividing up the state into sections that can be explored one trip at a time, it is useful to plan for future visits. Oregon is a big state so don't plan on seeing everything in this book in just a few trips.

FODOR'S OREGON is a great guide to Oregon. Granted, a large portion- at least one-quarter- is devoted to Portland and its environs, but that shouldn't surprise you, since it's the state's biggest city and has lots to offer. Besides, there's plenty in here about the Willamette Valley (including Corvallis, Salem, and Albany), plus a section on the city of Eugene, along with great coverage of southern and eastern Oregon. Overall, this book has plenty of information about sightseeing, dining, recreation, shopping, nightlife, and lodging, so if you're planning a trip to Oregon, or just interested in the Beaver State, DO NOT PASS THIS BOOK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I planned a trip to the PNW in May for my husband, his friend, and myself. We had a blast, and I essentially used this book for all of the planning. The hotel suggestions were fantastic. The RiverPlace in Portland was fantastic. It was a great location for walking around the cities, the hotel itself had a very cool vibe, and the staff was awesome. The Edgewater in Seattle wasn't quite as great, but we chose it for all the history associated with that hotel. Fodor's had given RiverPlace a star of approval, but withheld it from the review of the Edgewater. Again, the reviews were spot-on.The sight-seeing suggestions were also great. We headed out to the Oregon Coast and decided to visit Cannon Beach (Goonies, man). It was really nice to have reviews of each little seaside town. Multnomah Falls are not to be missed. The guidebook had great suggestions for Mount Rainier Nat'l Park as well...but I'm pretty sure the sequester screwed us out of being able to do as much as we'd hoped. We still had a good time though. In Washington, we drove out on the Olympic Peninsula, but we only had a day to spend. I really needed to narrow down to our top-choice spots, and it was perfect. We stopped at Lake Quinault for lunch, headed out to Ruby Beach, turned in for the Hoh rainforest, and just generally had a blast. (If you aren't pressed for time, I do recommend taking longer than a day for the Olympic Peninsula, it's huge, and we spent a ridiculous amount of time in the car).The only negative for me was the quality of the restaurant reviews. For example, the book suggested that while Ray's Boathouse was more about the view than the food, the food was still good. It wasn't. We had much better luck using Tripadvisor and Yelp for restaurants. Other than that, though, we were really pleased.

I'm fairly familiar with OR and I can see how most people traveling to places just want the basic info and if so, this book should fit the bill. For those looking for some more in depth stuff, forget this book. It's like most other travel books where the authors just "mailed it in".

I highly recommend this book to anyone visiting or traveling through Oregon. There are excellent maps, guides for nearly every region, every major site, City and town. Everything from food recommendation,Hikes, history, to sites you probably couldn't have found without a guide.

Fodor's Oregon was exactly what I needed to plan our trip to Portland next month. I love how it divides the state up into regions and then divides the city into neighborhoods. I always purchase a Fodor's guidebook for every vacation.

The book is perhaps too all encompassing. A confusing and poorly indexed look at a huge geographic and cultural expanse. I spent 30 minutes trying to find items specific to Vancouver Washington and turned up nothing excepted a confusing Portland section. The incredibly small number of reccomnendations for each 'area' ensures my vacation planning will take place online. The writing of the content is great. But it can't save the poor 'pull outs' with tips like: 'top reasons to go to the Pacific Northwest--'hip cities'. All in all disappointing.

Mark J. Madigan is a professor of English at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. He is the author of many articles on Willa Cather and the editor of three volumes by Dorothy Canfield Fisher.  Frederick M. Link and Charles W. Mignon are both professors emeritus of English at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and textual editors of the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition series.  Judith Boss is a professor of English at the University of Nebraska–Omaha and teaches computer applications in English. She has digitized several American literature texts for Project Gutenberg and other digital libraries and repositories. Kari A. Ronning is a research associate professor of English, assistant editor of the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition series, and codirector of the Willa Cather Journalism project at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

One cannot beat the writing of Willa Cather. Often overlooked in the western canon of literature, Cather's short stories are unforgettable. She writes with profound yet simple clarity; her vivid descriptions create for the reader exacting images in one's mind. Along with her gift of writing, Cather has a gift of telling stories of ordinary experiences – ordinary experiences that reveal the extraordinary elements of reality. I began to read Cather when I was 10 years old, and I continue to return to her books well into my adulthood. As I re-read her short stories, it is as though I am reading them again for the first time – they are that compelling.

Willa Catha, a writer I discovered by accident, to me is one of the great US writers. I have read book after book by her, and am glad still more are waiting for me to read.Youth and the Bright Medusa, is a book of short stories that continues her theme throughout her writing. "If you want to live fully, you must find what it is that is satisfying to you, you must find your passion". You must also recognize where those around you are invested in keeping you where they want you to be, having nothing to do with you and what satisfies you at all. It is the old American story, don't try to be uppity and someone other than who we want you to be. That being said, we have also all heard, "You can be whatever you want to be", while at the same time those same people do their best to hold you back. As Willa Cather stresses in this and her other books, "Get out there and be who you are. If you do not do that, you will live an unsatisfying life". You do not want to end your your life asking yourself: "What happened to me?"

This book is a collection of short stories that Willa Cather published in various periodicals between 1905 and 1920. Four of them, I believe, had previously appeared in an earlier short-story collection, The Troll Garden. With one exception, the stories are about the lives of various artists, mostly female singers, but include one painter, one sculptor, and indirectly, one composer. The stories are written in Cather's calm, but realistic, style. She doesn't much romanticize things, but shows life as it is. Cather is a true gem and I should be ashamed of myself for not having discovered her some half century ago.

Be sure to read "My Antonia" and "O Pioneers" before you read "Youth and the Bright Medusa." The first two are true masterpieces. I'm not sure that "Youth" is her third-best book. Try something else, instead, but DO read Willa Cather.

I was surprised to learn that this was a book of short stories, which I normally don't read. However, these were so well crafted that each one held my interest while reading it and was thought provoking for days afterwards.

Willa Cather was not a short story writer. This volume, published in her lifetime, collects what she considered the best of her short stories. They're dreadful. None are worth reading. Again and again the protagonists of her stories are shown as alienated and oppressed by the society they live in. Cather seems to believe that the artistic temperament deserves reward merely for existing. But Cather couldn't solve the difficult task of showing an artist at work, creating great art. Thus the characters seem like so many hogs. Today they would be bawling and rioting and looting the streets, peacefully protesting that awful beast Trump...In all the book, there's only one bit worth remembering, the closing line of "Paul's Case":Then because the picture making mechanism was crushed, the disturbing visions flashed into black, and Paul dropped back into the immense design of things.This is a clever way to describe the last instant of a suicide's life. It is not enough to redeem a short story, let alone a collection. Cather needed space to achieve her own great art. YOUTH AND THE BRIGHT MEDUSA is a bad book, which should not have been published.

If you're interested in humorous Chican@ literature, this is a must read. The sardonic tone of the author provides laughs throughout. In my personal opinion this novel has not received ample attention, and it was suggested to me by a professor. I was pleasantly surprised by how funny it was. It's about a boy becoming a soldier during the Mexican Revolution, then escaping, becoming a miner, then leaving that job and becoming a soldier again, then eventually becoming a student. The journey he went through is just insane.The novel has been published as it was originally released in 1947, so there are some typos that the current publishers probably could have and should have fixed. But it does not take away from the story at all. More people should read this book, and it should be taught in classes and least to give students a chuckle.
