Back when our kids were little and I worked at their grade school library, I would bring this book home to read to them, and they loved it. My husband would read Lily's words in a silly voice and I would be the narrator. So, it was a great family event to read this book. I've been giving it to the grandparents of a new baby in a family of older children as a gift. Some reviewers giving this book a low score mention that they feel the book describes the big sister acting totally inappropriately and saying mean things to the new baby. Sorry, but this pretty much happens in real life. But in the book and in real life, the parents keep encouraging the big sister to be nice and say nice things, and in the end-----she does and hopefully all the big brothers and sisters in the real world do, too!
Kevin Henkes writes delightful childrens books, and this is one of my favorites. We read it to our little ones when they were about to be presented with an unasked for sibling, and now I buy copies for families expecting another child. It is always a well-received gift.
For anyone expecting a second child, this is a wonderful book about sibling rivalry. The pictures are adorable and the story is spot on. Older sister Lily is excited about the impending arrival of her new baby brother...until the hairball arrives. Then she is jealous of all the attention he demands. Her poem about him being "the germ of the world" earns her time out in the uncooperative chair. But when a cousin picks on Lily's new brother, Lily comes to the rescue. My kids loved this book and I have bought it for several friends expecting their second child.
I remember going to the school library with my class and the librarian would do story time. This happens to be one of the books she read! I have kids of my own now and I feel reading is so important as part of their education. I started buying books and thought of some I remembered as a kid so I bought this one. My kids love it so much, they crack up. I sometimes switch the names and use my kids as if it were them in the story and that really puts a spark in them. A very awesome book I hope my kids will pass on to theirs.
An absolute classic book. Wonderful for teaching a child about their new baby sibling. My parents used this book with me and my little sibling and now I give it to my friends who are having second children. Kevin Henkes books are always delightful with sweet messages.
My granddaughter is a big sister (age 5) and laughed herself silly with this book. Of course she understands the love/hate relationship that exists between a big sister and a little brother. A wonderful book because love wins out.
Julius is my son's name so someone recommended this to us. I'm obsessed. It's a cute story, especially if you have a new baby and the oldest is having a hard time dealing with it.
True-to-life story and relevant to young children with a new sibling in the house. Great illustrations and wit. My daughter’s new favorite author and characters- and mine too!
